Tattoo Aftercare

How to Take Care Of Your Tattoo: A Step-by-Step Guide
Proper aftercare is crucial to ensure your new tattoo heals well and maintains its appearance, which is
why we have created this guide for those unsure where to start. Here are the steps to take care of your
new tattoo:

Initial Care (First 24 Hours)
Leave the Plastic Film On: After getting your tattoo, your artist will cover it with a plastic
film. Keep this on for the time recommended by your artist, typically 2-4 hours.
Wash Your Hands: Always wash your hands with soap before touching your tattoo to avoid
getting bacteria into the wound.
Gently Clean the Tattoo: Once you remove the film, gently wash the tattoo with lukewarm
water and mild, fragrance-free soap. Do not use a washcloth or sponge, only your hands.
Pat Dry: Use a clean paper towel or a soft, clean cloth to gently pat the area dry. Do not rub.
Reapply Plastic Film: If you were given plastic film by your artist, reapply after cleaning the
tattoo, at least once a day. It’s also possible to get pre-cut film at our web shop if you want to
keep it covered.

Applying Aftercare Ointment
Thin Layer of Ointment: Apply a thin layer of a recommended aftercare ointment or lotion to keep
the tattoo moist.
Avoid Overapplying: Too much ointment can suffocate the skin and lead to issues like excess
scabbing or infection.

Ongoing Care (Days 2-14)
Wash and Moisturize Regularly: Continue to wash your tattoo gently with mild soap and water 2-3
times a day. After washing, apply a thin layer of aftercare ointment or a fragrance-free moisturizer.
Avoid Picking and Scratching: Your tattoo will start to scab and peel, which is a normal part of the
healing process. Do not pick or scratch at the scabs.
Protecting Your Tattoo
Avoid Direct Sunlight: Yes, even in Norway, it’s important to cover your tattoos in the sun,
preferably with UV-block tattoo film. This will keep your tattoo from fading or getting damaged.
No Swimming: Avoid swimming in pools, hot tubs, oceans, or any bodies of water that can expose
your tattoo to bacteria and chlorine.

Long-Term Care (After 2 Weeks)
Continue Moisturizing: Even after your tattoo appears healed, continue to moisturize the area
regularly to keep the skin healthy.
Use Sunscreen: Once your tattoo is fully healed (typically after a month), apply a high-SPF sunscreen
to the area when exposed to the sun to prevent fading.
Monitor for Signs of Infection: Watch for signs of infection such as excessive redness, swelling, pus,
or fever. If you notice any of these symptoms, contact a healthcare professional promptly.

Additional Tips
Listen to Your Tattoo Artist: Follow any additional aftercare instructions provided by your tattoo
artist. They have experience and knowledge specific to your tattoo.
Avoid Heavy Exercise: Strenuous physical activities can cause excessive sweating and stretching of
the skin, which can hinder the healing process. Opt for light exercises that do not strain the tattooed
area.
Wear Loose Clothing: Tight clothing can rub against your tattoo and cause irritation. Opt for loose,
breathable fabrics.

By following these steps and tips, you can ensure that your new tattoo heals properly and looks great
for years to come.
