Stencil Guide

How to Apply a Tattoo Stencil: A Step-by-Step Guide

Materials Needed
– Stencil paper (thermal or freehand transfer paper)
– Stencil transfer gel
– Disposable gloves
– Disposable razor
– Soap and water or an alcohol wipe
– Paper towels
– Pen (for freehand designs)
– Printer (for printed designs)

1. Prepare the Design
– Print or Draw: Print your design on the transfer paper if using a thermal printer or draw your
design directly on the stencil paper if you’re not using one.
– Mirror the Image: Ensure the design is mirrored (flipped horizontally) so it transfers
correctly onto the skin.

2. Prepare the Skin
– Clean the Area: Wash the area of skin where the tattoo will be applied with soap and water to
remove oils and dirt.
– Shave the Area: Use a razor to shave the area, even if it appears hairless. This ensures a
smooth surface for the stencil.
– Sanitize the Skin: Wipe the area with an alcohol wipe to disinfect and remove any remaining
oils.

3. Prepare the Stencil Paper
– Separate the Sheets: If using thermal transfer paper, separate the top layer (with the design)
from the protective sheet below it.
– Apply Stencil Gel: Apply a thin layer of stencil transfer gel on the skin where the tattoo will
be placed. Make sure the area is moist but not overly wet.

4. Transfer the Design
– Align the Stencil: Carefully place the stencil paper onto the prepared skin, design side down.
Align it accurately so the design transfers correctly.
– Press and Hold: Press the stencil paper firmly onto the skin, making sure all parts of the
design make contact. Hold it in place for about 30 seconds so it transfers properly.
– Remove the Stencil Paper: Gently peel off the stencil paper, being careful not to smudge the
design. Allow the stencil to dry on the skin for up to 15 minutes.
– Inspect the Design: Check the transferred design for gaps or smudges. If there are any, you
may need to touch up the stencil or reapply it.

Tips and Precautions
– Test on Small Area: If you’re using a new stencil gel or transfer method, test it on a small
area first to ensure it works well with your skin type.
– Use Disposable Gloves: Always wear disposable gloves during the entire process to maintain
hygiene.
– Proper Hygiene: Ensure all tools and surfaces are sanitized to prevent infections.
By following these steps, you can successfully apply a tattoo stencil!
